Blog Tip #8

Be sure you have a hit counter installed. You can use Statcounter, Sitemeter, Google Analytics, and now most blogging platforms have built-in analytics, too. Be sure to use them, if not daily, then at least weekly to see how your promotion efforts impact your traffic. This is particularly vital before, during, and after a blog book tour.

    I've been scared to install Google analytics because I don't want the world to see my stats. Is it possible to do use a hit counter and keep it private? I use a Blogger template.

    With Statcounter and Sitemeter, you can opt to have the actual number hidden. So no problems there - but do install something so you can see how your efforts are improving your popularity. With steady work, you should have a nice following within a year, and that's a good thing if you're promoting a book.
